  28.       What follows is a press release from GTE of California. It talks about
  29.    Scam or Social-Engineering type fraud, and shows how clever those nasty 
  30.    phone phreaks can be. The scams themselves have obviously been overused
  31.    to the point of being noticed by the alert fraud-squad at GTE, so their 
  32.    use would not be e recommended.

  49.     (Thousand Oaks, Calif) - Con Artistsare putting a new spin in
  50.     phone fraud, GTE California warns its customers today.
  51.  
  52.        "We want our customers to be on guard against people
  53.     misrepresenting themselves as GTE employees, long distance phone
  54.     company employees or officials of the Federal Bureau of 
  55.     Investigation or the Federal Communications Commission," said Lou
  56.     Banas, GTE's local public affairs manager.
  57.  
  58.         "These imposters are calling our customers and asking for 
  59.     their personal identification numbers (PIN) for their calling
  60.     cards. And in some cases, these con artists are asking customers
  61.     to approve third-party calls under the pretense of catching 
  62.     phone-fraud 'crooks.'"
  63.  
  64.         "Once the customer gives out this confidential information,
  65.     the con artist begins charging calls to the customers calling 
  66.     card or phone account."
  67.  
  68.          Banas said phone-fraud artists continue to be inventive.
  69.     However, customers can help thwart these imposters by using
  70.     common sense.

  72.         "First, don't give out your PIN number to anyone except an 
  73.     operator, and only when you've initiated that call," he said.
  74.     "GTE will never ask a customer for his or her calling card
  75.     number."

  77.         "Don't approve third-party billed calls for anyone other 
  78.     than family members, or someone you know or can identify. And if
  79.     we (GTE) truly are conducting an investigation, we alread have 
  80.     the customer's billing and proprietary phone information, so we
  81.     will not ask for it over the phone."
